New and Improved
|
Hartzell Propeller has taken a generational leap in manufacturing by introducing a new process that represents a $3 million investment in technology. The process greatly improves the accuracy of manufacturing, reducing blade-to-blade weight and aerodynamic variability. The result for pilots and passengers is smoother running propellers.
The new process establishes all the dimensions of the blade and is now controlled to .0001 inch ( one-ten thousandth of an inch ) or 2.5 microns.
The blade airfoil is then produced from the computer generated solid model, and cut in a single pass using a 7-axis mill. The new process employs tool and part probing to ensure accuracy.
In addition to using high technology machining equipment, a new ( NDT ) Non-Destructive Test Cell provides more reliable blade testing. The environmentally friendly semi-automated Dynamic Cloud fluorescent penetrant inspection process eliminates procedure and operator variability; thus, producing accurate results and ensuring blades that are free from even the most miniscule surface flaws.
These improved processes are incorporated into all propeller designs that Hartzell manufactures for RAM Aircraft, bringing more performance and value directly to the customer.

New Hartzell ScimitarPlus propeller blades offer a unique combination of blended aluminum airfoil design and tip sweep, which deliver higher all-around performance.
RAM incorporates Hartzell’s ScimitarPlus Blended Airfoil design propellers into all RAM 325 hp and 335 hp Cessna 340/A, 414 and 414A RAM Series IV, VI and VII Upgrades.
The curved ScimitarPlus blades utilize a high lift series of airfoils at mid-blade sections to enhance aircraft take-off and climb performance. A combination of tip sweep and a series of airfoils at the tip sections cause lower transonic drag, resulting in a very low noise signature.
This proprietary blend of airfoils also generates excellent cruise performance in the thinner
air at high altitudes.
Hartzell has essentially presented a generational leap in manufacturing with its new ScimitarPlus propeller blade manufacturing process. The new process represents a $3 million investment in technology. Overall, the new process greatly improves the accuracy of manufacturing, reducing blade-to-blade weight and aerodynamic variability. The result for pilots and passengers is smoother running propellers.
The ScimitarPlus blade shank machining process establishes all the other dimensions of the blade, controlled to .0001 inch ( one-ten thousandth of an inch ) or 2.5 microns. The airfoil is then produced from the computer generated solid model, cut in a single pass using a 7-axis mill.
New non-destructive test cells provide more reliable testing. An environmentally friendly
semi-automated Dynamic Cloud fluorescent penetrant inspection process ensures blades
are free from even the most minuscule surface flaws.
Hartzell is also developing the next generation of NASA GAP program propeller designs based upon Blended Airfoil Technology, the same technology behind Hartzell’s ScimitarPlus propeller which is offered by RAM.
RAM installations include a new one piece spinner, a new bulkhead, and new de-ice boots.
